Very symbolist image! Great photo!

Nice shot. The plant is a member of the agave family, probably Agave americana, since you found it in New Mexico. It was an important food source for Ancestral Pueblo peoples all over the southwest. In Mexico it's called maguey, and it's used to make an alcoholic beverage called pulque. A close relative, Agave tequilana, is the source of tequila.

I confirm Century Plant. I have them growing in my front yard, but much younger than your example. A nice shot.

There are a number of plants with this typical blooming stalk that shoots up amazingly high then dies. One, in Maui, is called the Silver Sword, and is a protected species. It blooms once after 25 years then dies, and I was fortunate enough to see three in bloom on Haleakala many years ago.

Interesting capture and motif, Richard. The clods on the branches gives it a kinda Bonsai feeling. No idea about the species, but i like it:).
