Description

Zam’s Prehistoric World “Wait!” screamed Zan, but it was too late. Zam had already opened the trans-portal and the boys vanished into the void. Zan only had a brief moment to change his shield setting to an EVA setting before he found himself on a lifeless moon with no atmosphere and barely any gravity. Zam had arrived a moment before his brother and was instantly accosted with the freezing cold temperatures of the open vacuum of space. He gasped for air that wasn’t there and his lungs burned from being deprived oxygen. Zan had loved everything space since he could remember. He had models of the ancient Galaxy Exploration Ships hanging from the ceiling in his room. But more important, he had not only taken the standard required eight hours a year shield training that every student was required starting in pre-first year school, but he had also taken the EVA elective each year. Zan had over 120 hours in the school EVA simulator. Zan looked up to see his brother was frantically clawing at his throat and his face was blue and already covered with ice crystals. Father had probably been the one that had given Zam the portal shield belt and taught him to use it, but he would only have taught Zam how to use it for additional protection in the forest. Zan was certain father had never expected for his prehistoric cave-born son to go off on an EVA walk. Zam had not known that the shields had several settings. The setting he was using would allow air to freely flow in and out of the shield but an EVA setting would have sealed the shield, holding the air inside his shield, and protected him from the cold of space. Zan immediately activated a “death immanent” distress beacon and watched in horror as his brother’s body kicked and launched himself tumbling into space. Zan formed the briefest of plans. He bent his knees, aimed toward his brother, and launched himself toward the tumbling body. Zan had launched himself a little too fast and slammed hard into his brother. Zan wrapped his arms around his brother’s shield. The impact caused the boy’s to begin a violent spin. Zan pressed his face shield against Zam’s face shield. He could see the fear in his brother’s eyes. Zan needed to get oxygen and heat to his brother quick. He had a plan. Zan opened the feed vent in his own face shield. It was designed to allow drinking and eating while still keeping a protective shield on. Air immediately began escaping his own shield, but it wasn’t enough. Zan pushed his oxygen pump to maximum, a feature intended to pressurize the shield for deep ocean exploration, and created a virtual hurricane of air flowing out of his own shield, through his brother’s shield, and slamming into his brother’s face. Zam gasped at the incoming oxygen, but he was still freezing to death. Zan wondered where the Rescue unit was. Grandfather’s D-Cruiser should have been near and an “immanent death” beacon should have forced the nearest ship to auto launch an A.I. Medical Rescue Unit. Zam was freezing. Zan had no choice, he had to do something fast. He had one last idea and was likely to go to prison for it. After the Demon Wars nearly 6 million years ago the Demon’s were forced to sign the Anti-Cruelty Act and the demons most natural personal defense became unlawful to use anywhere in the universe. It was pounded into every young demons head since birth. Zan had no choice, his brother would die. Zan lit himself on fire. His demonic ethereal flames heated the outgoing air and Zam was hit in the face with a blast furnace of tornado force winds. The ice began to melt. It wasn’t a perfect solution, but it had been the best Zan could think of under the pressure of the moment. Zan chanced a glance around. Where was the rescue? At this rate of oxygen consumption, Zan had only bought them perhaps 20 minutes before the oxygen disks, designed to last for years of normal use, would be expended. Where was the rescue unit?

Let's just hope they don't think that Zam activated the imminent-death beacon due to being attacked by a renegade demon who's using forbidden-fire against him - They might send an attack squadron as well. (On a brighter note, I think I saw a rescue-unit parked at the Starbucks on my way here.) Nice cliff-hanger.

I'm glad to see the bonding. Let's hope that Zam isn't incinerated by Zan!
