Description
Venice. The Frari’s Basilica. Presbytery. The presbytery, sacred place for celebration of the liturgical services, is outlined by two almighty columns which soar upwards where the transept and the central nave meet.
The mastery of the architecture, the harmony of the lines, the grandeur of the monuments on the walls, the stained glass windows which allow a hazy light to pervade the lower area and a bright and glorious light up above, all of which leads the observer to a single point: the Assumption by Titian, the most precious jewel of the Basilica’s masterpieces.
The six webs, which cap the hexagonal apse completely fretted with double lancet windows, flow into the keystone in which is portrayed Christ an act of blessing. The light trickled down from the round windows; the crosses are a splendor of multicoloured glass. Some of the double lancet windows (above) represent Saints and episodes of the life of St. Francis (left) and St. Anthony (right). Other windows are lightly coloured so as to let an iridescent light filter through and light up the Presbytery.
Both the ancon and the over-hanging statues: Christ Resurrected (195 cm) between St. Francis (193 cm) and St, Anthony (198 cm) are the work of Lorenzo and Giambattista bregno and were commissioned in 1516 by Father Germano from Casale. The painting of the Glorious Virgin, commissioned to Titian by Father Germano in 1516 was placed un the marble frame (12,50 x 7,25 metres9, which stands on a grandiose pedestal with golden frieze that acts as the base to the two fluted columns which support a stone architrave with a golden frieze.
