Description
Venice. The Frari’s Basilica. The Altar of St. Joseph of Cupertino. The Sybils, by Alessandro Vittoria (1525-1608).
On the upper pediment there are the two supine Sibyls, which resemble the famous statues by Michelangelo in the sacristy of St, Lorenzo in Florence. The Sibyls, together with the statue of St, Jerome, The Baptist, St. Peter, St, Andrew and St, Leonard, represent the most important pieces of the artist between 15 60 and 1575. Vittoria expresses his most inner self in these works.
The Sibyl on the right bears a tablet with the inscription: ALEXANDER VICTORIA FACIEBAT.
