Description

It is summer once again. We have a garden and in this garden are two jelly-bean tomato plants. They are just starting to ripen. How do I know this? Thumper, Hazel and Spot (our resident WILD rabbits) have started their taste testing experiments. They bite into one tomato - not what rabbits like. They bite into another one. Still doesn't taste good. This experiment is repeated on any little tomato that is almost ripe. Being not too high on the "little gray cell" chart, it doesn't dawn on them that the 50th bite is going to be just as unappetizing as the first one and, on the evolutionary changes scale, it probably won't for another 100,000 years. I don't have that long to wait. Especially since they are branching out to nibble on the melon vines. Therefore Ray and I installed a fence around the garden. There were several greenhouse platforms with a broken 2 x 4 on them stored in #4, so we secured them with wire to the upright posts in the raised bed where we have the plant barrels. A few judiciously placed cable staples and a bungie cord and voila! - we have a fence! I just hope the rabbits appreciate all our hard work. I tried to make a decent thumbnail for this but I gave up when the size had reached 100 x70 and it still wasn't under the 15kb limit.

We, as well as many other people have the same problem. We can't keep them away from our plants. One year I tried 'shoo-shoo' but the bunny just looked at me. I picked up a rock tried to throw it in front of him hoping to scare him away. Ended up hitting him on the nose. I felt really bad about that, hoping I didn't hurt him. We now have babies running around the yard. It will never stop. Rick

Rabbits are fun to watch, but not so great for a gardener... they eat like goats and breed like, well... Bunnies..lol. Great idea, hope it works... sometimes a ring of bloodmeal around the garden will keep them out as well.

Why not build a cage for your three rabbits instead?

Love what you've created in your garden. Contrary to Watership Down, the rabbits are not too bloody smart - just persistant

Hah! It's amazing the labor we must go throught to protect our gardens, ornamental or vegetable, from all the critters out there.

A Fantastic job, Really, something I myself would love to be doing right now, considering all the GMO's they're force feeding us, So I wish you all the very Best, and Good Luck

I hope this works for you! I find rabbits can be both ways, rather clever, or rather forgetful. There weren't many that got a second chance to learn the dangers of being in our or a neighbors yard once we got Sophie. Those that did manage to get away often didn't come back too quickly. However, the draw of food is a powerful urge that sometimes outweighs the threat of death.

Pesky little critters to be sure, but I'm sure all the sweet tasty veggies will be worth all the work in the end. I really like these photos specially the second one there is something very artsy about them. The POV and the way the greenness of the grass and trees with the sun reflecting and filtering through give a slight surrealistic hue to them More please

They DO dig, you know. Can they dig under that Teri? I'd keep an eye out for that. What a lot of work! No bunnies aren't very bright are they? We have bunnies around the apt. complex here and they chewed through two of my spark-plug wires! Gotta watch 'em!! Nice images :)

now wait this reminds me politicians braincells, they are not far above the little grey cell-chart-just open your history book or the newspapers from the last days and you see that even after fed up for the 50 th time they dont realize that they continue to produce ever more fups.

It's easier to eat the rabbits. But eating "family members" isn't very appetizing
