Description
Venice. The Frari’s Basilica. The Chapel of St. Michael. On the right wall of the chapel there is a sepulchral monument dedicated to Melchiorre Trevisan, General of the Venetian fleets. He died in 1500. Above the elegant urn, flanked by two beautiful putti with shields, stands the hero with a Phrygian cap (a sign of command). The entire monument is decorated with a frescoed frieze in which is depicted the family coat of arms, the Lion of St. Mark and other trophies. The monument is attributed to Lorenzo Bregno (1460-1530).
Trevisan was hughly appreciated by the Friars for the gift of the reliquary of the Precious Blood, brought from Costantinopoli in 1479 and donated to the convent in 1480, as stated in the inscription on the outside of the chapel on the separating pillar.
Beneath the inscription is the wood statue of St. Joseph by Vincenzo Cadorin (1910).
