the last time I was here, I said I'd go right to the artists I'd neglected the last time (I run out of steam quickly these days, unfortunately). Well I'm not back for a long visit yet, but I wanted to leave at least one comment for now. And then come back with a long session when I'm ready to return for a longer time. So this is just a sample, ok? But I can't tell you how excited I've been to see you do 2D so much---I've begun about 20 sitemails!---and watch all your exuberant explorations. This isn't the "one" image for me, because the others aren't "less": It's nothing like that! I just choose this to be representative of what you've been doing, for all kinds of unnamable reasons... For one, you used kiddie paint and glue (!): You're playing, in other words, you're experimenting, diving in, etc. A lot of 20th C. artists did that, in particular, even after doing huge oils, etc. (The early cubists used old newspapers, prints, whatever, as you I'm sure know.) You got a big splashy result here, with an almost edible look, mixed with a high sheen decoupage look. A real marine/underworld exploration, mixed with ketchup and mustard (it has a 50's drive-in feel, in a way!), mixed with Jackson Pollock-y explorations, mixed with luscious splats and splotches and spills. Pollock used to run all over his paintings---they were huuuuge, and he ran over them with cans of paint in hand, splashing and swooshing as he went. (I'll provide some links, in case you haven't seen the pics...) I'm sure you didn't do exactly that here, lol, as the piece isn't that large. But it has the feeling of great freedom, and exploration and exuberance. Also, you're putting primary colors together; and you're allowing the bold splotches to dissolve and mix into others---the way your yellows interact with your greens, for example. The reds, here, are 'shouts' in the mix, and particularly luscious in the upper left corner. And the blues are like background, like the sea. I have lots more to say about your 2Ds---and my usual long-winded comments on your always unique digital works. But for now, let me come here and dance in joy at the stuff you've been doing since I last commented, and tell you it's so much fun to see this side of you. I hope you continue. Terrifically free work, childlike in the best sense, and exploring the same themes you've explored in your studied and complex digital montages---only with the sense of one who jumped into the water and danced and splashed and explored. Lovely exuberant stuff. I hope you're doing well, Mandi! (PS: In case you've never seen Pollock---or others like him---at work, here are 3 random shots of him painting: He runs all over hell, throws the paint, etc etc. Amazing thing was that he got somewhat classical, controlled results; but the action and motion is all there, if you're interested. ((I had troubles with some of his actions in life, but that's another story...)) This is in case you decide to paint football-field-sized works. They're here, here, and here. Can you imagine living in a place that has these all over the walls? I'd need to get away just to get some sleep!)
