Description

Just hours earlier this was a very busy place as trains of the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad off loaded passengers after a scenic trip to the Yukon Territory. The WP&YR narrow gauge railroad was built in 1898 and hauled freight until 1982 when it closed. Fortunately this historic railroad was saved by the growing number of tourists brought in by the Cruise Ship industry and was able to reopen in 1988; it is now a very popular excursion and offers a truly unique experience. This "little planet" image is a spherical panorama taken next to the Train Depot in Skagway Alaska. To create this view it was rendered using a stereographic projection (this type of projection has been used by map makers for hundreds). I'm not a big fan of these "little planets" but they are interesting if you haven't seen too many. It was purely by accident - but I think this image makes a nice scene with the buildings and railroad tracks curving around. Zoom for a larger view - but be careful these images will sometimes make me a little sick :) Thanks for viewing and thanks so much for your comment I really enjoy getting them!!!

What an interesting effect! I hadn't seen this before. I think it works well in this setting, with the mountains on one side of the "planet" and the city on the other.

When viewed close up it look far better than I thought it would or could. Like you I am not a great fan of these; fish-eye is about as far as I can go and those have to be done well, most aren't. The strong verticals of the buildings and how they are well-centered really keeps the balance of he composition and trades off with the dark mountains. The strip of sidewalk across the tracks acts as a band tying the two parts of the scene together.

That is very cool! Maybe somewhere in the universe is a very small planet with a tiny railroad and not much else!
