Description

Now we step inside the enclosure of the Papal Palace at Avignon, France. This is part of the old Palace, the first built part, the part started by Benedict XII. This is his cloister, which would have been under construction in about 1335 making it about 675 years old. To the right is the Chapel of Benedict, the first house of worhship on the site, although in the second stage this chapel got dwarfed. In front of us, against the outer wall is the guest chambers for visiting dignitaries. And on the left is the conclave, the place that was used four more times to choose a new pope. The cloister was literally a place of separation between worlds. On the right was the monastic side, on the left the political and daily. Crossing the cloister was to cross between the worlds of duty to the faith. A sense of scale is provided by the person in the lower center.

without zoom you can't get the real scope of the size of this place... Amazing structure and a really great shot Roxy.

Nice shot and the choice of B&W seems correct because to those in power there everything was black and white!

I would describe this POV as immersive – it really put you in the scene and captures the scale of this place! I think the monochrome image works very well with the stonework. Great series!!!

Fantastic... the 'man hours' that must have gone in to building this palace... and all for the 'servants of God'. Keep them coming... the information you are supplying all adds to our understanding of these places. Wish I could have stowed away in your suitcase. LOL

Thanks for pointing out the figure. The scale of the place is quite daunting and I imagine that is exactly what was intended. Great shot.

I had looked at the other image first, but decided to check this one out. It is a good thing that you have a person as a scale reference in this. It's huge! Great pov - must have been a 'belly shot' from the ground :) Very interesting and a lovely image, Roxy!

Wow - that really is huge! It took a moment to see the figure, but it really gives this a massive sense of scale. A most spectacular photo, Roxy!
