Description

The Odeon of Herodes Atticus is a stone theatre structure located on the southwest slope of the Acropolis in Athens. It was built in 161 AD by the Athenian magnate Herodes Atticus in memory of his wife, Aspasia Annia Regilla. It was originally a steep-sloped amphitheater with a three- story stone front wall and a wooden roof made of expensive, cedar of Lebanon timber. It was used as a venue for music concerts with a capacity of 5,000. It was excavated in 1857-58 and completely restored using pentelic marble between 1950-61. Since then it has been the main venue of the Athens Festival. It has hosted many famous artists: In 1939 Herbert von Karajan and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra performed here. It has hosted Maria Callas and the Bolshoi Ballets among many others. It was the venue for the Miss Universe 1973 pageant, and hosted Yanni's Live at the Acropolis performance in September 1993. Sting performed at the venue during his Mercury Falling Tour on May 17, 1996. Elton John performed two concerts at the venue during his Medusa Tour in 2000 (Sources: Lonely Planet 'Greece'. 1996, Wikipedia). . This picture was taken on 27 June 2013, Sig...

Surprisingly there is a lot of restoration going on after all the fuss about Greece's economy! This is the best shot yet, even though there aren't any girls in it!
