Description
This a 'motta' of what is usually called 'motte and bailey' type. It's at Castelminio di Resana (province of Treviso). You can see the hamlet's bell tower in the background. Here you can also see the mound, where the lord's dwelling was located, and the large area around it where people working at the lord's fortified house lived, together with stables, smith's shops etc. In case of danger, people and animals from the countryside took shelter within the walled circular mound. You can see part of it (too large to stay in the photo) on the right. Beyond the circular mound with one or more palisades there was the moat. The term Motte and Bailey comes from the Normans, and in general medieval architecture, but it's also used for this type of 'motte' (mounds), dating from the Bronze Age, in our region. I pasted a 'ghost' building to give an idea of what it might look like.
Thanks for your kind comments.

Amazing history for what, to the average eye, is just a mound of dirt. The ghost image gives an excellent perspective on the size.

What a truly sensational capture this one is Sandra. I was totally captivated by the photo as well as you're detailed explanation of the history behind this place. You had such a clever idea to paste a ghost building in the image to give us a sense of what it might have been like. I keep looking all around this image and can almost visualize the people working all around the lord's dwelling.
