Description

Venice. The Frari’s Basilica. The interior. Twelve almighty columns, symbol of the apostles, hold up the sky of the Basilica, composed of beams, webs and ogives, which harmoniously overlap and intermingle. The church is in the shape of a Latin cross and has three naves with a transept. The six polygonal chapels in the apses extend along the length of the entire transept whereas the aisles are separated from the central nave by six couples of two-order pillars crowned with capitals with hook-like leaves, on which are set the ribbed cross vaults. The fifth couple, at the entrance, to the choir, are trilobite pillars. In the central apse, there are elegant poly-style pilasters instead of the circular pillars. The impression of height is slightly reduced by the twin order of wood paneled tie-beams, whereas the space is outlined by the presence of the artistic choir placed in the middle of the church (the external length of the Basilica is 102 metres, the width is 32 metres, the height is 28 metres). The floor is made of red and white diamonds in Verona stone; entrance to the choir is three steps up from the lower area; another three to get to the chapels in the apses. The presbytery is raised by a fourth steps. The background to the walls is made up of bare red bricks which give a warm tone to the atmosphere. The white of the pillars and monuments contrasts to the warmth of bricks to give a more varied and animated ambience. At the far end of the central apse there is the ASSUMPTION by Titian, magnificent vision framed by the arch of the choir.
