Description

Salt Warehouses. (ZOOMM!!) Not far from Holsten Tor and at the brink of River Trave these soulful houses are placed. They date back to the 16th to 18th centuries and were originally used as salt storage from nearby mines in Lüneburg. Today well restored they are a memory of the big trading city Lübeck, placed 17 kilometers from the sea but connected by its vital River Trave, the lifeline to the Baltic Sea. As The Free City of Lübeck it gained slowly power in the Hanseatic league and became the most important in this trade alliance governed by its merchants and was once Germany's second biggest city. My own interest in these charming houses was at first their great individualism and the "personality" they possessed. Clearly built at different times and I have some "pity" with the middle one, a tightly squeezed and bended house. ;o) Have a good time! :o) JohnnyC / Rhanagaz

A delightful photo, Johnny - and that poor, skinny building in the middle does look a little squeezed! :-D They definitely built things to last back then!

I love this old Hanseatic houses. You have some charm and awakens the desire to live here. These here are lovingly restored. The water tower on the right would be a dream property of me. Extraordinary architecture, class pic!

I cannot believe it, that they actually squeezed another one in there - it looks really quite hilarious or should I say unforgettable ? I have travelled on the Trave, in a sightseeing boat, that was simply beautiful - thanks for sharing Johnny, BB

A fantastic view of these historic buildings. I had not noticed the skinny building in the middle but I did notice the tiny patio between the two left roofs!

Wow, great photo.. I wonder if the architects had a sense of humor to plan to make the one so squeezed in?
