Description
In Byzantine times there was a palace where the Blue Mosque now stands. Sultan Ahmet I (1603-17) set out to built a mosque that would rival and even surpass the Hagia Sofia. The Blue Mosque, designed by its architect Mehmet Aga, was built between 1606 and 1616, more than 1,000 years after the completion of the Hagia Sofia.
The mosque is lined with more than 20,000 handmade ceramic tiles, made at Iznik in more than fifty different tulip designs. The upper levels of the interior are dominated by blue paint. More than 200 stained glass windows with intricate designs admit natural light, today assisted by chandeliers. The floors are covered with carpets.

The six minarets were a matter of contention and a first, since four minarets were the common maximum. Only after one more minaret was added to the Mastid al-Haram, Grand Mosque, in Mecca was the six minaret issue settled (Sources: Lonely Planet, Turkey, 2001; Wikipedia).

long ago a custom in Mexico was a person with a home of many tiles was very wealthy. maybe the custom came from this castle like structure. very beautiful architecture
