Description
The main entrance of the Blue Mosque faces the forecourt and the ablutions fountain. Only worshippers are allowed to use this entrance. Tourists enter the mosque on the south side and exit on the north side.
The portico on three sides of the forecourt can be used for prayers, meditation or study during warm weather.
The mosque is such a popular tourist attraction that admission is controlled so as to preserve its sacred atmosphere.
When entering the mosque shoes must be removed (the entire floor of the mosque is covered with carpet for praying), shoulders and kness should be covered (as is required for most religious places), and all women must cover their head with a scarf. The latest requirement went into effect only two weeks prior to our visit.
