Description
Venice. The Frari’s Basilica. The Cloister of the Holy Trinity.
This cloister is so called because of the representation of the Holy Trinity which is mounted over the well. It was designed by ANDREA PALLADIO but not constructed until 1589 after his death.
The grandiose porticoes, supported by 44 columns bearing round arches, are framed with a balustrade terrace in Istrian stone. During 1713-1714 Father Antonio Pittoni had the monumental well erected by Giovanni Trognon. The well was adorned with various statues sculpted by Francesco Penso known as CABIANCA. On top: The Holy Trinity, whereas to the side are St. Peter and St. Paul. The four angels near the well and the eight statues of Franciscan Friars on the balustrade were sculptured by Cabianca and Zanutti.
The cloister used to be opened to the public who came to collect the water from the well. Water was always plentiful. In fact, in 1718, when there was a draught, all the wells of Venice dried up except for the one of the Frari.

When I saw the thumbnail it was like: "Oooh! Italy!" Great picture! Shooting at the well from under the portico gives it a beautiful framing... I like... Uh oh... forse non occorre che faccia tutta questa fatica a tradurre... Davvero bella!
