Description
The Chateau de Fougeres is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe. It's partially in ruins, but quite a bit of the structure is still standing. The original wooden fort was built in the 11th century, was occupied at various times by the French & the British, & like many castles, was destroyed & rebuilt.
From Wikipedia:
"The Chateau de Fougères is a castle in the commune of Fougeres in the Ille-et-Vilaine departement of France. The castle was built on a naturally protected site, a rock emerging from a swamp surrounded by a loop of the Nancon river acting as a natural moat. It had three different enclosures, first for defensive purposes, second for day to day usages in peacetime and for safety of the surrounding populations in times of siege, the last enclosure was where the keep was situated. In all it has an impressive 13 towers."
At least one more photo to come tomorrow, with a view of the moat. Please zoom...

Sometimes old buildings just look like architecture to me, but this one seems a bit more real. (Does that make any sense?) I can easily imagine people living and working here. SO interesting!

It can be a good setting for a film or something... Great photo... (And you are right: you need to zoom to see it properly, so many details! I can count the bricks and stones :-) )
