With Halloween coming couldn't wait to get Charlotte Walton in an image again. I have always preferred the Greek Mythology portrayal of Witches over the Roman. The Greeks describe witches as both Beautiful and Powerful. In Greek Mythology the Crone was reserved for the Seer, the Oracle, or the teller of fortunes if you will. Metaphoric of men's Lust for Power and the Fear of the Future. So, along with the incident in Coventry England in 1947, Greek Mythology is also where I turn for influences for my character Charlotte Walton, The Coventry Witch. The portrayal of witches in Greek Mythology Part 1: Hecate (hi-Kat-ay) While Hecate was not specifically a witch, she was the goddess of magic and witchcraft. And also the night, the moon, ghosts and necromancy. She is said to have had the power over heaven, earth, and the sea. (That's three of the four elements.) She was a mysterious divinity, who, according to some, was a daughter of Persaeus (or Perses) and Asteria. Others have attributed her to be a daughter of Zeus and Demeter. (and say that she was sent out by her father in search of Persephone) Still others make her a daughter of Zeus either by Pheraea or by Hera. While others, (how many of these others are there) say that she was a daughter of Leto or Tartarus. Homer does not mention her. Traditionally, however, she appears to have been an ancient Thracian divinity, or a Titan, who bestowed on mortals wealth, victory, wisdom, good luck to sailors and hunters, and prosperity to youth and to their flocks of cattle. However all of these blessings could be withheld by her, if she assessed that these mortals did not deserve them. She was the only one among the Titans who retained this power under the rule of Zeus, and she was honored by all the immortal gods. She is said to have kept two animal familiars: the black she-dog and the polecat (a mustelidae house pet kept to hunt vermin). The she-dog was originally the Trojan Queen Hekabe, who leapt into the sea after the fall of Troy and was transformed by the goddess into her familiar. The polecat was originally the witch Gale who was transformed into the beast to punish her for her incontinence. Hecate is usually depicted in Greek vase painting as a beautiful woman holding twin torches. Sometimes she was dressed in a knee-length maiden's skirt with hunting boots. (similar to Artemis) In ancient statues Hecate is often depicted in triple form as a goddess of the crossroads.
