I am noticing similar results on my scenes applying HDR techniques. Not so sure the image information has all the detail for so many detailed small objects. Are you using 3 different exposures?

No, it's a single exposure HDR. I'm not really interested in precise detail for these kinds of images, I'm mostly interested in composition, color, mood & creating a more painterly look.
