Description

Hagia Eirene (Hagia Irene) was a former Eastern Orthodox church located in the outer courtyard (1st courtyard) of the Topkapi Palace. It is a museum now. The building reputedly stands on the site of a pre-Christian temple. It ranks as the first church built in Constantinople (Istanbul). The Roman Emperor Constantine I commissioned the first Hagia Eirene in the 4th century. From May to July 381 the First Council of Constantinople took place in the church. It was burned down during the Nika Revolt in 532. Emperor Justinian I had the church restored in 548. It served as the Church of the Patriarchate before Hagia Sofia was completed in 360. Heavily damaged by an earthquake in the 8th century, it dates in its present form largely from the repairs made at the time (Source: Wikipedia). This picture was taken on 29 June 2013, Sig...

Interesting photo... and thanks for the commentary.. explains why it definitely looks like a bit of a 'bitser' of a building!... character built in over the centuries!

What an imposing structure! It's so massive. The dome and windows look relatively modern ... hard to imagine it's so old!
