Description

The steamboat Arabia hit a snag while navigating the Missouri River in September, 1856. The ship, along with over 200 tons of cargo, sank into the mud. In 1988 the Arabia was located about 45 feet underground and half a mile from the Missouri River. Her cargo was excavated and is now housed in a museum in Kansas City. Think of it ... the steamboat sank in 1856. That cargo is the largest collection of pre-Civil-War artifacts in existence. It's like looking at the contents of a department store. If you ever get the chance to go to Kansas City, put the Arabia on your list. You'll be amazed. Many of the items are a part of a past none of us can fully comprehend, but even more are as familiar, and as similar, as the contents of your closet and toolshed. I have my great-great grandmother's silver thimble, and it's nearly a twin to the one on the left. Steamboat Arabia Museum website Steamboat Arabia Wiki .......... I hope you enjoy this image, Denise, as well as the story. It's a fascinating place!
Happy Birthday, Denise!size=6> color=cb812a>

I spent a few years in a civil war era historical re-enactment group and later as a volunteer at a living history museum. It is interesting some of the things they had back then that are now lost in time. Think of the common stuff we had as children (don't say pet dinosaurs) that are now in museums.

Fascinating and marvellous to think the course of the river has moved that much in 150 years.

Such fancy pins. Are they hat pins? I still have my mother's thimble (sewing, what's that?). I see it hasn't changed in over 150 years.

Oooh, little shiny things--the magpie in me wants to steal them all. How wonderful to find all these so long after the fact. Wonderful capture of this array of gewgaws with such lovely pearlescent light; as a kid hatpins fascinated and terrified me--I always wondered if it hurt to stick those things into their heads. It took a while to realize it wasn't the head that was the anchor! Thanks so much for the birthday wish!
