Description
This is Harley. He has been our long term foster who came to us when his Dad hit a rough spot (Lost his job when the housing complex he worked for and lived at was sold and the new owners fired everyone) a couple of years ago.
His Dad has gotten a job and a place to live, but Harley has stayed with us because it is easier for us to take care of him.
Unfortunately, Harley was diagnosed today with Canine Prostate cancer. Life expectancy can range from a few months to a year max, but it is always fatal.
We'll be meeting with an Canine Oncologist next week to look at options and timelines.
Currently, he's heathly for having an orange where it should not be and he still loves to play fetch and take up as much space as possible on the bed.
With any luck, we'll keep him as long as possible.
To say the least, this is devastating after losing Jager back in January also to cancer.

Poor baby, my deepest sympathies, I wish you the most of the rest of the time you will share with him.

What a shame! I have had 18 rescues so far but have not come across this cancer. I do have all my animals neutered, maybe that's why. I do hope he has as long as possible with you!

Thanks all for your kind thoughts and words. Harley is fixed and from the research, fixed or unfixed, the occurrence is the same--about 1% of the dogs seem to get it especially older dogs (Harley is coming up on 12). It is also always fatal--they can delay it is about all they can do. Timeframe seem to be between a month or two once it presents, up to a year. One article I read with the owners of a small dog that have extended his life to 18 months as of last year, but radiation and chemo and removal of teh disaeased tissue is the reason why. In the end (and they acknowledge it) will be the same unfortunately.
