Description

This is actually my favourite way to see a city. I ride a lot and have both a Trek Mountain Bike and a Cannondale Touring Road Bike of my own. When I travel I will always try to sign on to a bike tour or if I am there for a stretch I will rent a bike. I say this is the best way to see a city but it is perhaps not the best way to photograph a city, at least for me. I like a bike because I can see a lot more territory than walking and unlike a bus or tube I have the freedom to choose my own schedule and routes. But once I am on a bike I switch gears from a photographer to a rider and I am far less inclined to interupt a ride to stop and take photos. I cannot count the number of great shots I have ridden past. So I see a lot more but I shoot a lot less. I have to make a real hard decision to stop and take pictures. That is why I like to take tours because the guide will be stopping to talk or he will point out something and I will stop and then play catch up with the group. This is a bike I rented in San Francisco. I rented a street bike, kinda clunker and had it for two days. After having to get off and push my way up the long steep hill on the way to the research center that I was working at I went back to the shop and said "I want a mountain bike." The guy said ok, but he only had this boy bike left in my size. I said, "No problemo, I only care about the gears, not the style." It was very light and fast; then I was able to climb all the hills on my route.

Do you mean 'Cannondale'? I totally agree that biking is a great way to see a city.

Sounds like a lot of fun, as well. I can't remember the last time I got on a bicycle.... I'd probably break my damn fool neck... LOL! Cool shot, Roxy!

Looks like 29in wheels? I have a Giant MB with 26in wheels. Nice shot – I have the same tendency when riding and won’t stop.

We were this year in san francisco and I must say that I really like this city. Here I come back again on all cases. Often we buy a day ticket for bus / tram. Then we tell ourselves after 6 stations we get out and look us around. So completely unbiased. Of course we also have a plan for every city, we absolutely want to see and photograph. But this mix like that. With interest follow I your news serie, Roxy!!

I totally recommend the hybrid bikes. Basically a mountain bike with road tires. They where derisively called comfort bikes until co-opted the hybrid name. Almost like yours get rid of the heavy mountain bike tires and replace them with road tires. Ours also had shock absorbing seat post. And the 3X8 or 24 gears were great. We road 475 miles in RAGBRAI with them. The other great thing is the upright seating position means that you see a lot more.
