Description

Not really.... Just another shot of the badlands of South Dakota. A vast sea of eroded buttes, spires, gullies, fossil beds, and prairie, it looks more like something you'd see on Mars, than in the mid-western USA. We spent only a couple hours here, on our way to the Black Hills. I could have spent days here - everywhere you look there's another shot waiting to be taken. On the day we were there, the sky was filled with dark, ominous looking clouds, which gave it an even more alien feeling. I could well imagine seeing Frodo and Sam around the next gully, making their way to Mt. Doom. We did get a few sprinkles, but I'm glad it didn't rain... In addition to getting soaked, I understand the surface here gets really slippery when it gets wet. You can read more about Badlands National Park HERE. I'll be posting more photos of our trip - and I'll have a few surprises along the way.... :-D Thanks for dropping by, and for all your comments and support!

It is quite alien looking, its hard to pick the scale with this shot, It could be a vast canyon.

That's one of the things I love about this place - the bluff on the left is actually about 12 feet high. But I could composite a spaceship into this, make it really tiny, and it would look like a huge canyon.... And I'm quite likely to do just that! LOL!

Oh yeah, that is high clay content, more like grease when wet. A wonderful shot, full of mystery!

It's as close to alien as we get on this planet without leaving the surface... Awesome shot, looks like a good time.

WOW Rod! This is so surreal! YOU actually photographed this? Everything looks too perfect and alien to be a photo of any place on earth. The lighting, landscape, even the sky looks ... alien. VERY COOL shot!

It does look like something like one would imagine from Lord of the Rings. Having travelled through a lot of this kinda country I am not surprised by the lack of scale and the desolate feeling, but I am always still impressed. I have just discovered about the Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota which I have now added to my bucket list. I am attracted to it because it looks equally bad but is on roads less travelled than Mt. Rushmore.
