Description

Brompton Cemetery is found between Old Brompton and Fulham Roads in West London, and is considered to be one of the finest garden cemeteries in Britain. It was consecreated by the Bishop of London in 1840, between 1952 - 1996 it was closed to burials. I got to say that when I think of places in London to visit the last thing on my mind is a cemetary. Having said this, during a walk near Fulham I came across this place. What first struck me was the domed building and amazing memorial sculptures everywhere, secondly was its sheer size (39 acres) as I walked further in, and thirdly the peace and tranquilty which was seen by a few visitors sunbathing (!), reading books, and having a bite to eat. Although the cemetary has been re-opened to burials, all the headstones and epitaphs I saw were dated. There is also a degree of overgrown plants and damaged sculptures. Both these aspects give this place an historical frozen-in-time feel. This place is open to the public and a visit is recommended for historians and those with memorial art and scuplture interests. Original 9000x1812 Many thanks for viewing!!

Your panos are always great. Cemeteries are always interesting places to visit. Imagine if each of those plots were a person 'sun baking on the grass'. It's a reminder of just how many people you were actually in the company of!!

Wonderful pano shot! The blue sky is a nice counterpoint to the old stones, usually these shots seem to have ominous clouds in them. I happen to love cemetaries, the older the better!
