I know this probably isn't the best forum for this, but my computer is about to die so i'm thinking of upgrading.
I'm looking at getting an Asus Sabertooth motherboard and an AMD FX8350 8 core processor. Anybody know if this is a good idea or can you suggest a better option.
Thanks.

I wouldn't have a clue about what computer is best for graphics or anything else.... someone like renecyberdoc or faemike might have some suggestions. My computers are almost always second-hand LOL. I love the humor in your image!

You want a 12 core for intense graphics, it costs around 10-12 thousand. Mine is dieing too, I'm looking at upgrading.

10-12k..... Ouch. I'd think about it if i made money out of this stuff (and if i was any good at it). Unfortunately that's a little out of my price range. Please tell me that's not what most of the people on here are using. My 2k machine is looking very sad right now.

As for the art, I laughed. Very nice piece of work. A little self-indulgent, but then isn't all art. As for the computer without knowing your financial restraints, I'd say go with an Intel quad-core at least 2.8 Ghz 4th gen i7 with minimum 8 gigs ram. That's my 2 cents.

I used to have a Pentium IV 3.2GHz version (my first PC). Motherboard went to sleep and never woke up :-(. I'm thinking of going back to Intel, but its hard not to back the underdog (AMD).

that brings a smile — same as Greywolf44, it really depends on what you can afford, but, from reading and looking at different forums, a Mac running graphic soft on parallels seems to run a lot faster than on a raw PC or Mac (go figure), in fact in the Vue forums there is one guy doing this whose render times and processing power seems to knock everything into the shade. It is also worth remembering that when the new MacPro wastebin makes its entry then every fanboy will be trying to unload their old 20kg boxes. If you can last till then it might be worth picking up a last year's model, at least one that can run Mountain Lion/Maverick, that way you can get the best of both worlds. I confess to being a Mac user since the 128 (Amiga days) but Vue, sucks on the Mac as do a lot of graphic programmes ostensibly designed for the PC, even though they have been re-written from the ground up (right!). But, you need to cost up the software to make that an option. Sculptris, Zbrush, Silo, work well on Mac. You will need the suitable version of Parallels (have used both VMware and Parallels at work and Parallels is better) — am assuming you have all the windows soft(?). I currently use an old 2007 mac pro with 8GB ram and would probably get more life out of it if I did the same, but old habits die hard.

Thanks Paul. I used to be a Mac person myself, (still am at heart), right back from the old Mac "Classic" and LCII days. Unfortunately they got a little expensive for a while and it started to get hard to get software for them. I also found that it was fun to build your own machines. A shame but you don't seem to be able to do that with a Mac. I'm very much a newbie at this stuff so a lot of what you've said goes way over my head - Sculptris, Zbrush, Silo, Parallels... all Greek to me :-(. I've still got a lot to learn. Thanks for the response. At the moment i'm running an AMD 1090T with a MSI 890FXA-GD70 motherboard. Its still hanging in there... (only just). I had an interesting time last night when it decided that i didn't need access to any of my USB devices (mouse, keyboard, wireless router, etc etc.)

Great job!
