Description
The Vintage Wings of Canada FG-1D Corsair, in the markings of Lt. Robert Hampton Gray VC, DSC.
Hampton Gray flew Hurricanes in North Africa before transitioning to the Corsair and joining the crew of HMS Formidable. While in Europe he took part in attacks on the battleship Tirpitz, and was twice "mentioned in dispatches".
When the Formidable deployed to the Pacific, Hampton Gray earned his Distinctive Service Cross for the sinking of a Japanese destroyer near Tokyo.
On August 9, 1945 he led an attack on several IJN warships, sinking the escort Amakusa before his burning plane crashed. For this action, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. He was the last Canadian to receive this decoration, and one of only two members of the Royal Navy FAA to receive it in WWII. He was also one of the last Canadians to die in that conflict.
Thanks to Wikipedia for some of the details - there's quite a write-up of Lt. Hampton Gray there!

Great photo of a really nice restoration job on the Corsair. I must admit I have never seen the Canadian markings on this plane. Looks Good!

Fantastic shot... Corsairs always look good in RN markings. Lt Hampton Gray's Corsair is on my build list, as a tribute to his selfless actions.
