Description
There is a myth that tells the tale of how the Sumerian Goddess of Love [and War!] decided to go down into the underworld [some say to usurp the Queen of the Dead]... Later the story was retold as Akkadian Goddess [Ishtar] who went down... and later still other Goddesses... All down into the Underworld and all died and yet returned after three days [for a price-- for the underworld will not release you unless you give another in your place].
I was recently reading a book on writing character archetypes by a feminist author who believed that this story of Inanna is the "feminine journey" equivalent to Joseph Campbell's "Hero's Journey"... That Inanna's story is every woman's story... except one thing... Inanna and the rest were not Goddesses for women created by women... they were Goddesses created by men for men... which is why Inanna [and all the rest] had reputations as Harlots... and why they never had a stable relationship [as some of the other goddesses]... The real Great Mother Goddess had been pushed kicking and screaming into the Darkness of the Underworld by the likes of the Male Sky gods... And she, Eresh KiGal... "The Great House of Scented Earth", took up the throne of the Goddess of Death... A goddess who wept for the tragedies of lives cut short
Inanna for some reason did not feel she had been give her due in power and glory... and apparently settled on the idea of going to the underworld and push from the throne the original 'pre-historic' Great Goddess" but Inanna proved no match for the Goddess of Death...
perhaps I should recount this tale in full...it is after all a great Halloween kind of tale...
