Description
While walking through Jacksonville with Tara, Bill & my wife the other day, we stopped to take photos of this fine old church - the First Presbyterian Church - which was built in 1881. I've taken many photos of this church & even posted one here before, but I like it's design so much that I find it hard to resist taking more photos every time I pass it.
I wasn't planning to post this, but I just acquired a Photoshop plug-in filter called Perspective Pilot & I wanted to try it out. This filter provides an easy way to straighten multiple lines that are tilted or distorted (somewhat like the Photoshop Warp tool) & this particular photo was a wide shot with very noticeable distortion. The filter turned out to be very easy to use & I was very satisfied with the results. So much so, that I began playing with the photo some more & accidentally came up with this image.
A fair portion of the church front came out too bright & the lines on the walls were barely visible, so I decided to use the Levels & Curves tools to see if I could bring them out more. I was able to do that (had to use a few additional tools as well), but in the process I accidentally hit on a configuration that dramatically altered the look of the image.
Maxfield Parrish is an artist whose work I admire very much & the deep blue sky & saturated shadows reminded me a lot of his paintings - especially a series of New England landscapes with buildings that he painted (hence the title). I'm not a very technical photographer, but I do like to play & experiment with postwork effects & I consider trial & error to be a very valuable technique. And it's very gratifying when the results exceed my expectations...

Beautiful. I love the bright Autumn colors against the blue sky. The church is a classic with its steeple towering to the sky. Great shot and photo manipulation.

I wonder how many people that roof has killed? A grand looking old church.

I think that the shadows and reddish colors enhance this photo. Nicely done!
