Description

Thanks to 2 people P3Design and colmarq, who brought this to mind and motivated me to study AoA's SSS settings for DS4.5 & up (free @ Daz3D.com), & thanks to colmarq who shared his settings on his "Lucy Zepp...Life's Sweet Journey" image. In my study so far, I have found the AoA SSS results a little better then the UberSurface SSS results, yet it takes a lot more resource while rendering (depending on settings) and in my case I can't render a large (2000 x 1500) image with a character up close with a quality SSS setting, yet I can with UberSurface SSS setting. I also found that you don't have to use a color for the results, you can use the "Absorb" & "Scatter" settings to produce what color you want the SSS to produce. I simply used the color that's already on the UberSurface settings, and set the "absorb" & "Scatter" colors the same. So far I believe the less "absorb", the less lights get blocked, the more "scatter", the more brighter. Also I found that the more "scatter", the more resource it takes to render (haven't studied the "Shading rate" & "Shading scale" settings yet). The results still doesn't produce what Poser can do though (as far as I know yet). One important thing, though, you still need an SSS "strength" texture for each skin, so that where the bones are more present (skull/shoulders/chest), the less you want the SSS to shine, and the less the bones are present (fingers, breasts, stomach, cheeks), the more you want the SSS to shine. Here is a comparison using Lucy Zepp (age 16), SSS settings on skin (excluding nostrils, eyesocket, & eyebrows), mouth parts, & teeth, with my good quality "photo studio" light & a "back light only" setting (UberEnvionment light used, no shadowless lights garbage used) The UberSurface SSS setting already comes with both Lucy Zepp packages. Still studying, my decision is not final. ...wolfie

keep up the studies;]....there is an awful lot that can be changed with both shaders.Read the read me, at Daz for the AOA it explains, and shows the results of different shading rates and shading scale. I use primarily the AOA shader now...Best results are obtained if it is applied to the base(daz default) skin, not the ubersurface ones...at least in my experience so far;]

Hey thanks buddy, now I'm learning this thing even more. Holy crap, I like the "Ambient Contribution", now I can make parts glow, fading out into the other parts (like fingernail glowing and fading into the fingers), that is really cool! Now I understand the other settings as well. One thing to mention though, it doesn't matter if you load it onto a surface that's set with Ubersurface or default surface, the whole shading "system" changes, but if you're saying it'll keep the base's specular & other settings better, you may be right, I haven't tried that yet (but I did set the speculars & other settings correctly after applying AoA's SSS, and it did keep the diffuse.bump maps loaded). ...wolfie

Wow, you learn fast :) I have been struggling with the sss shader for weeks now :) I think the Uber SS looks great too, maybe even better, dont know quite yet. They are both beautiful and realistic, great work.

Thanks a lot, hon! Indeed, I did learn it fast, firstly I'm a fast learner if I put myself into it, secondly having already learned DS USS (plus Poser SSS shading scale) concept had the biggest contribution. I myself like the USS as the con for the AoA SSS (time consuming render/resource, more difficult settings to play with) weighs more then the Pro (slightly looks better if you can get some more wax feel to it as promised). I think I'm gonna have a talk with AoA myself. Thanks for the comment, hon! :) ...wolfie
