Description

The Swazey Hotel. Please zoom... Yesterday we visited Bodie, California...or rather the remains of Bodie. It was founded in 1859 when gold was discovered in the surrounding hills. Between 1879 and 1880 the population grew from about 20 to 10,000. Only about five percent of the buildings it contained in its 1880s heyday remain. Today, it stands just as time, fire and the elements have left it...a genuine California gold mining ghost town. There were 2,000 buildings in the 1880s...today 110. The mill for working the gold ore closed in 1938. The town survived until sometime in the 1940s. In 1962 the State of California turned the town into a State Park. A great deal of preservation and stabilization was done and today the town is maintained in what California calls a state of "arrested decay".

This is a super zoom. A great pic and wonderful textures in the timber. To answer your question on my post, I think the yachts sit on their stabilizers.

I wonder if the state of California could do that for me. Was it them who did it for Joan Collins, I wonder..

Amazing that a whole town it just abandoned. You have so much land, that this is possible. It wouldnt be so here LOL! Love this shot.

My, the building looks like a CG generated image pasted into a real scene. From the title I was thinking the jail house has been arrested for breach of time (silly me). Must be because I have a silly kitten sitting looking at me over a corrugated cardboad barrier intended to keep him from the computer's cables. He's begging for attention, and some pizza. He's eaten a small square of bacon and a small piece of pineapple! My colleague came with him Friday evening. My, is he a communicator! And beggar! So I guess I'm surrogate mom and dad! This photo's such a switch from the autos! But the buildings almost from the same time period. Keep up the good work! :-)

As much as that building is leaning, it might be the next to fall over!! I like the composition with the two other buildings in the distance, and the light is just right. Excellent image!

OH wow, this is just great; the light is fantastic and the scene looks exactly like what it is--a a very old building that stands to remind of of times past.
