Description


Just outside Kristiansand, at Møvik, you can find the biggest landbased canon in the world. The gun is intact, one of the original three 38 cm Krupp quick charging cannons at the fort. The type was developed for battleships and there was also the "Bismarck" and "Tirpitz". Canon has a total weight of 337 tons. Of this race alone 110 tons. It is 19.76 meters long. The gun is manufactured by Fried. Krupp in Essen in 1940 and has serial No. 79 Møvik on the Norwegian side was with a sister battery in Hanstholm in Denmark filed to block the Skagerrak and the sea route to Eastern Norway, Kattegat, the Baltic Sea and the Baltic States for allied naval forces. In the distance is 126 km from Møvig to Hanstholm. Only a field, Tues nautical mil wide, in the Skagerrak could not be covered by the guns on these plants. This field was therefore mined. Adolf Hitler personally went in for locking strategy and decision Hanstholmanlegget was taken in May 1940. In May 1941, two of Hanstholmkanonene in place and on the Norwegian side was preparatory work started.

Great image. The shadow of the photographer shows the scale of these guns nicely. Technically, as these are rifled, they are NOT cannons. (Cannons are smooth-bore.)

Whoooaa ! You're right I did miss this, it's bigger than our house! I had no idea you'd kept things like this, I'd always assumed this sort of thing was destroyed at the end of the war. Impressive and educational, thanks Knut.
