Description

Yesterday we spent several hours at Mono Lake. The rock formations you see were formerly below the surface of the lake. They were formed when mineral-laden spring water bubbled up into the salty water of Mono Lake. Calcium carbonate (limestone) was the result. The City of Los Angeles started diverting water from Mono Lake in 1941, and the lake level dropped nearly 50 feet over the next 40 years. Conservation efforts have allowed the lake level to start to rise again. Mono is a habitat for birds, migratory and otherwise, and it's a fabulous place to visit. For more information on Mono Lake, visit their website HERE

Wow, what a shot Tara. Beautiful composition. As to your question of those semi-circles in the lifeboat on my last upload, I have no idea!

Very cool! Thanks for sharing this. Maybe we're finally learning that most resources are finite if we do not conserve and/or recycle.

I have been here many times..... It's one of those placed you have to see with your own eyes to really "get it". These tufa towers can be so tough to capture with the chalky white that most of them have. You did a beautiful job here! I've made several attempts at capturing them myself but the time of day was always wrong and they just blew out. Anyone else that has been here probably knows what you got as well....... looks like you were there late in the day with the sun going down? Good for you!!!! Sounds like you took the time to go to the visitors center in Lee Viking as well... they actually did a really nice job there. A ton of info packed into a small space.
