Description
The Black Death started in Europe in 1328 and lasted until 1351 although there were outbreaks for the next sixty years.
The disease was called the Black Death because one of the symptoms produced a blackening of the skin around the swellings. or buboes. The buboes were red at first, but later turned a dark purple, or black. The Black Death was spread by fleas that were carried by rats or other small rodents. Nearly one third of the population of Europe died, about 200 million people. The 1328 outbreak in China caused the population to drop from 125 million to 90 million in just fifty years.
The "Medicos" wore the strange-looking "beaks" which made them look like great birds of prey, but actually were stuffed with herbs to keep out the smell of death. Those were not the good old days.
I used Lyne's pigs for the scene. Thank you Lyne for sharing your wonderful animals with us. The pigs are my favorite.

what a scene! it is so nice to see something like this which completely diverges from the usual (you know what, LOL) yes, indeed the Black Plague was certainly a hellacious period.. a couple of interesting things about this period: the speed by which this thing traveled has some experts questioning how this disease was actually transmitted and those people who worked closely with horses never contracted the disease since whatever vector transmitted the disease (and i hold it was the flea) was repelled by the smell of the horses--which makes sense, if one has ever been around stables will know what i am talking about.. anyway, great scene, Linda...

Cool information. It may be true. I was looking up organic cures for fleas for my dog and it said they are repelled by garlic. You can put it in their food or rub it on them....LOL I would be repelled by that myself.

Really great, the way you integrate history and art. :-) This reminds me of Anya Seton's "Katherine." I think the novel took place during the era you're describing and one part is devoted to a vivid description of the Black Death.
