The suitor from Emmental Long, long ago, a poor cowherd from Emmental fell head over heels in love with the daughter of a rich farmer. The girl also loved the young cowherd more than anyone in the world, but the young man was not good enough for the girl‘s father. He believed that the young man had not yet achieved anything, and was not worthy of his daughter. The story would have ended here, if what follows hadn‘t happened. The lovesick young man went back to his hut in the mountains where he kept his cows and thought about what he could do to win the hand of the girl of his dreams. For days, he thought about how he could prove his sweetheart's father that he was worthy of his daughter but all his thinking came to nothing. One evening, a terrible storm broke over the mountains. The young man had just finishing making his dinner when he heard somebody pounding at his door. At that moment, the young cowherd remembered that he hadn‘t yet said his evening prayers and was prepared for something bad to happen. Shaking with fear, he opened the door. There, illuminated by a flash of lightning, stood the ugliest mountain troll that you could imagine. The mountain troll instantly entered the hut, devoured the young man‘s dinner, which was on the table, and immediately got ready to leave again. But before leaving the hut, he pressed a slip of paper into the cowherd's hand. The piece of paper that the young man, who was relieved to have got off so lightly, held in his hands was curious. Looking more closely, he saw that it was a recipe for something that required a lot of milk and a few other ingredients. The mountain herder couldn‘t imagine what the recipe could be for. However, as all of the ingredients were available and the recipe had aroused his curiosity, he risked making it. The very next day, the young man started to prepare the milk according to the recipe. He poured it into a large cauldron over the fire, stirred it, and added the other ingredients. He followed the recipe closely and patiently and saw how the mixture gradually became firm. At the end, he had a large, round wheel of cheese. He wasnt entirely sure‚ what it was, but the important thing was that it was something unusual that he had made himself. He put the cheese on his back and started out for the rich farmer‘s house. The farmer was truly impressed by this large, unique product. He had never seen anything like it before. Once he had also eaten a piece, he was certain that the young man would be a real asset to his family. The lovers soon celebrated their wedding and lived happily ever after and cheese-lovers around the world still benefit today from their love.
