Description

A Utility Service Vehicle (USV) orbits Earth 22,300 miles (45,890 km) above Earths equator in Geosynchronous orbit. A crew of two service a small satellite attached to a tow pole. I built the model from my original USV design which I did with five other coworkers at Kennedy Space Center (KSC), back in 1985. A physical model was built by one of my coworkers from my design drawings. We presented it to company management but the handwriting was on the wall even then as to the eventual fate of NASA human spaceflight and the company eventually shelved the idea. As it turned out, such a vehicle was never required due to geosynch satellite reliability and it being cheaper to launch another satellite should one fail. I featured it in my graphic novel about human spaceflight. North and South America are visible, although pointed towards the bottom of the image due to the camera angle.
