Description

Midnight, 28/29th July 1942. Townsville, Northern Australia. It was the third raid in as many days. Ten searchlights made a cone of light over Cleveland Bay, locking onto the lone intruder. But it was no fairy on top of this christmas tree. It was an "Emily" flying boat, just like those that had attacked on the previous two nights. The aircraft's crew probably understood that the use of searchlights without flak could logically mean one thing... Fighters?! Well, soon enough, two fighters bounced them in the searchlight beams, spitting tracers and yet barely pricking their bomber's armour. The frustrated crew cautiously lowered the big seaplane's nose down toward the sea and jettisoned their bombs. After successfully breaking the grip of the searchlights they retired across the Coral Sea to lick their wounds. "Attacked by two Hurricanes..." was what they reported. In fact, the flying boat's approach had been painted by radar and so USAAF Airacobras were already orbiting in wait in the moonlight. Rendered in Vue 11 Esprit (another outing for the night-time atmosphere from the previous render) My "Emily" model getting some air-time with National7's Airacobra (re-textured). Thanks for viewing and comments

I like these atypical scenes. You have a flair for them. Nicely done.

If memory serves, the only casualties in these raids were a young child and some coconuts !...It amazes me how little has been written about the attacks on Australia, it seldom get's a mention in history documentaries or 'general' accounts of the war. I for one am grateful for your reminders and the many 'new' stories you have added to my ' must look into' list......thanks Brian. Another great render, that conveys this little known episode so well.....
