Description
The Federation Tapestry was designed and made by the Victorian Tapestry Workshop (now the Australian Tapestry Workshop) to mark the centenary of Australia’s birth as a nation.
The tapestry was designed to capture the history and character of Australia. Principal artist/designer Murray Walker has drawn on what he terms ‘the strong and rich folk history of this nation’. He explains ‘this is not textbook history, but a series of visual markers that trigger memories and inspire reflection. It can be interpreted on many levels. It is a people’s history’.

It is interesting that he chooses Sorry about the opera house. I suppose it is because it was deigned by Danish architect Jørn Utzon! There has been a series on fascinating programmes about Australian art (not counting the art of the indigenous peoples) and the difficulties artists had in your country doing it. The programme is by Edmund Capon, see it on BBC iplayer.

Andrea, SORRY has been a very controversial word in Australia for many years. It has nothing to do with Utzon. 'SORRY' over hear is a powerful word that refers to when Indigenous Australians were forcibly removed from their families and communities under the guise of trying to help them. Children were taken from their parents and then raised as 'whites'. Politicians refused to say sorry for many, many years, but now we even have a National Sorry Day that gives people the chance to come together and share the steps towards healing for the Stolen Generations, their families and communities. It is held on May 26!

A nice explanation of "sorry" for Andrea - I was going to ask. I do remember seeing a movie about 3 young girls that were forcible relocated and I think that only 2 made it back home. I think that it was a fence that saved them????? A beautiful and colorful tapestry - you always find the most unique things!
