Description

Rat Rods originally evolved in the 1970s as a counter-reaction to the high-priced 'customs' and typical hot rods. The typical Rat Rod is a late 1920s to late 1950s coupe or roadster, but sometimes a truck or sedan. Many early (pre WWII) vehicles were not built with fenders, hoods, running boards and bumpers. The bodies are frequently channeled over the frame and sectioned, or the roofs are chopped, for a lower profile. Maltese crosses, skulls, and other accessories are often added. Rat Rods often appear unfinished, and, at most, primer-only paint jobs are applied. Many feature 'Natural patina' (the original paint job with rust, blemishes, and sometime bullet holes) left intact. A variety of engines are used. The most common engine type that is used in Rat Rods are flathead V8s, early Chrysler hemis, or more modern small block V8s. Straight 8s, straight 6s, straight 4s and V6s are also used. This picture was taken at a car show in Glendale, Arizona on 19 October 2013, Sig...

I like almost anything like this. Rat rods, garage bands, prison tats ... it's an interesting reaction to super-smooth styles that have gotten out of hand. Nice shot!

Here they are not allowed on the road as they pose a danger to others without fenders, and they are often short of proper lighting and more.
