Description

A while ago I touched on the subject of our local U-Boat, the U-534. A part of the now defunct Mersey Maritime Museum, she was cut into 4 sections and moved to her new home at Woodside Ferry, where she is now a very popular attraction. For various images I have turned to Google Earth for backgrounds and I also spend hours 'driving' around America and Europe courtesy of Google Street Scene. Recently I was exploring my local area and noticed this, which had escaped me up till now.It appears we have 2 U-534's...the sectional one at Woodside and the original 'intact' one on the docks link road. I really didn't know which gallery this belongs in, I chose Photoshop as that was used to composite the images, but you can check Google Earth there really are the 2 versions. This led to more exploration and something quite strange right on the doorstep of the Riverside Bowl.......if anyone is interested ??

@ tigertim Cutting one up to make it more accessible to tourists (especially those with mobility issues) makes sense if they have a second, intact one.

I use Google maps for touring around places too. It's a great way to look at places you can't get too, especially in 'street view'. Very interested in what you have seen on your doorstep there!!!! That's a nice parade of shops and pavilion you have next you too :)

Great job! I love to Google Earth but they are not always as accurate as they like to claim.

This seems to be a mystery, unless Google has googled it all up by combining 2 maps from different dates. A very interesting discovery, indeed. Maybe something you can follow up on by photographing both sites on the same day. Good luck! :-)

I checked with Live Maps (Microsoft). Well if you use Live Maps (http://it.bing.com/maps/?mkt=it-it) and look at the same place at full zoom, strange things happen. The image change completely: the sections of the cut U-boat disappears (there is a parking lot) and the U-boat is where she has to be. A full zoom there are some blurred square I suppose it's because of some sensitive spots. You can see what looks like the "cut" U-Boat at "not-full" zoom and this image is similar to Google's.

Thank's Flavia, interesting.....the sectional version is the up to date one, the 'complete' version was cut up about 3 or 4 years ago..

Very interesting. Google Earth is about eight years behind in the development of our neighborhood.

It certainly looks like you have 'two' there.. That IS unusual given the rarity of the things! As to 62guys statement about the 'need' to hack them up so people can access them easier, what rubbish.. The whole point is to show it whole as was, to SHOW it as it was in life! IF you can in, I am sorry for that, but neither could many in WW2.. Does he advocate we hack up our old aircraft as well so people can get inside? Anyway, this goes for the period stains that decided to hack this U-boat up because lets face it, they could not be bothered.. But more likely needed to fund an immigration center.. Rant over! Google Earth is great is I could it as clear as you guys lol Rob
