A beautiful shot why would they build a canal there when it's so close to the sea ?

It's a beautiful scene. I hate to show my total lack of geography but is the Crinan Canal supposed to be something of which everyone is aware? I have never heard of it. It looks like an absolutely splendid place. I do wish that, when people do these landscapes views (most of which are wonderful), an explanation or description of the shot would be given for those of us who are not experienced world travelers.

@Rob - They built it there for the same reason America's Intercoastal Waterway was built: to shelter the barge traffic from storms.
