Los ingredientes principales son: la patata (previamente cocida en una salmuera) y cortada en dados de un centímetro de grosor aunque en caso de no ser congelada puede darse cualquier medida y mezclados con la mayonesa. En las variantes mediterráneas suele añadirse una cierta cantidad de atún (en conserva de aceite), además de algunas verduras cocidas, principalmente dados de zanahoria, judías verdes redondas y guisantes. El resto de los ingredientes es importante, pero depende de los cocineros, y suelen ser: unos huevos duros, huevo rallado (en muchas zonas estos son un ingrediente fundamental), espárragos, pimientos del piquillo (pimiento rojo), opcionalmente ajo, gambas; también suelen contener algún tipo de ingrediente que acentúe su acidez: aceitunas enteras sin hueso o picadas, pepinillos en vinagre picados. Menos tradicional, aunque también con cierto éxito en la receta actual, es añadir surimi (barritas de cangrejo). El plato es tan popular en España que casi no hay bar que no lo presente entre sus "tapas" más populares o como aperitivo, siempre en su propia versión. Además se puede encontrar fácilmente en la zona de congelados de cualquier supermercado en un recipiente en forma de bolsa de plástico con todos los ingredientes ya preparados y listos para cocer durante unos minutos, sólo basta añadir el atún (de lata) y la mayonesa, siendo el sabor industrial generalmente inevitable. Also you can easily find in the supermarket frozen any shaped container plastic bag with all the ingredients already prepared and ready to cook for a few minutes, just enough to add the tuna ( canned ) and mayonnaise , with Industrial taste usually inevitable.
