Description

This was taken in around 1980 when I was stationed at RAF Alconbury in England. My career field was Mechanical and Electrical Power Production. The cable that this F-4 is catching with it's hook, is attached to a tape which is wound around a spool. There is an engine that is used to rewind the tape. Because of that little engine, Barrier Maintenance was put under Power Production. That was great for me, as I got to watch jets take off and I got to hide out in the barrier huts during war games. This was taken during a test of a new barrier system. A nice pilot was helping us with the test. Speaking of nice pilots . . . Happy Birthday, Bill!!!

Thanks Lucinda! I've always wanted a Phantom for my birthday. Love this 1980 vintage photo...bet you got a lot of opportunities for photography while in the USAF. I really appreciate the thought you put into this...it is right up my alley.

Terrific shot, although to me the Phantoms were always deserved of their nickname, 'Double Ugly'!

First of all Lucinda, allow me to say what a super cool dedi this is to your friend. I very much enjoyed the photo and reading about you're experiences with planes. I am so jealous as it would've been a blast to watch jets like this one take off on a regular basis. The best most of us can do is live such experiences through the words and images provided by kind people like yourself.

Love the F-4! One of those planes that looks like it's doing Mach 2 even when parked on the tarmac :) This one looks like it's a recce version?

Hi, Lucinda:)) Wooow, so nice to be here:)))))))))))) again and what exciting career!! I love this model and i think i already did a model in little scale so looong ago, i enjoyed to do this with my son :)) more later i did other kind of 'models' in my work, but they were maketes for moulds for F.1:)) in chrystal. It was an excitment also, but in another way:)) I love this one a lot and your photo in 'real time' is terrific. I think it is the best gift for a pilot like Bill:)) Very well thought and done:)))) Happy Birthday Bill and many many more with much health, joy and love:)

Terrific clarity and semi silhouetting depicted in this pano of the old F-4 fighter and environs for Bill's birthday commemoration, Lucinda.

I am in awe of such a striking and dynamic looking plane and what a cool dedi for Bill, but I am also in awe of your job experiences in the UK - it comes as a total surprise ... WOW ! I take my hat off to you, you are multi-talented indeed, who would have thunk it ? ;)) BB

A very impressive shot Lucinda. Gosh you got to see a lot of placed around the world. I doubt very many people get the opportunity to utilize such a choice vantage point as this. I have to ponder at this moment of what would have amounted to the "state-of-the-art" technology which crammed this plane. It would have been so closely guarded in those days and yet would be described as primitive now. In 1980 I would have only just written my first programme for our school's (well shared with another school) mini-computer. And in 1980, Tom Baker was beginning his seventh and final year as The Doctor.

The F-4 was a workhorse in Vietnam. We didn't see that many in the mid 60s!
