Description

Inside the ruins of the Saint Michael monastery on the Heiligenberg (Saints' Mountain) near Heidelberg lies this old grave. Miracles at the grave led to the monastery becoming a popular place of pilgrimage, over the centuries. (There are many old stories, for example of bells which suddenly started ringing without any human intervention, of ghostly lights luring people into deep crevices, secret passages that were never found and stories of hidden treasures.) The grave stone is not original anymore after vandals destroyed the original plate. It was rebuilt in the last century. In any case, it is a mystical place. Thanks for viewing.

WOW! It would takes a real low life individual to desecrate any grave... especially that of a holy man! - Glad his resting place was restored...sadly too many are not! Someplace near Heidelberg when I was there we found a real opulent cemetery next to some sort of Palace just to its right as you faced the entrance into the site. Also, there was a large oval bird pond in the front of the Palace. The graves, from many ages was most unusual. Many had glass enclosures around them and even windows into the crypts.... most macabre! In all the world I had never seen such a place! I was wondering if you might know of the place? I had thought it was Weinheim or something like that... I had tried to find it on line ever since... somewhere I have a few photos of the Palace and pond but failed or were perhaps not permitted to photograph the cemetery which would have made a magnificent photographic study!

I can not even imagine what would bring someone to vandalize a grave or anything for that matter, thanks for sharing this.

Yeah. It is beyond me, that anybody would do such a thing. Good it was renewed, this stone. WOW! It is pretty old, that grave.

Cool shot of the final resting spot of said monk, Klaus. Cool about the spooky lights. One would think that the ghost of the monk would have prevented any vandalism.

Perhaps they thought there was treasure beneath... not that treasure, or anything else, is a good excuse. I helped my uncle a couple times at old graveyards when I was young, but obviously, being in California, we had none that were as old as this. Great photo.

I was going to be impressed that the grave plate was the original from 1070. I guess that vandals do the wrong things all around the world. I nice replica of the original grave plate!!!!
