Description

Hi Friends, On footpaths, in villages, scattered anywhere in the hills of South Limburg you can see statues of Jesus on the cross. We have a name for it, which you can not translate into another language. In Dutch, also: Wegkruisen, which would be like "road crosses" in English. Underneath I put a link on which you can find several kind of "road crosses", all in our Provence http://www.limburg.anneliesverheijen.nl/typ-kruis-I.html The one you see on the picture is not far from our home. Behind it is the railway, in the distance on the left you see an old water mill. (located at the back of the white house.) Once I did an upload of the mill itself. Thank you very much for your visit! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you like, some more info about the different meaning of the crosses: The crossing at intersections of roads, along farm fields or against walls form prominent identification in the Limburg landscape. Explanatory Crosses recall a special event like an accident or murder, they are placed in memory of the deceased. Vow Crosses are made in gratitude for a miraculous healing of a sick person. Devotion Crosses the passer call for a moment of reflection and prayer. Hail Crosses stand alongside or in a field to protect the harvest and averting storm. The oldest crosses are hardly decorated. Only later began to decorate the crosses and the whole was placed with a founding text under a shed. Often there was also a group of trees planted at the cross. As pointing in different places a hedge of lime trees still a place where once stood a cross. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Mies, I want to thank you so much for sharing this wonderful photo with us. We do the same thing in my area, but on a much smaller scale. I was really moved by this image of Jesus.

It's so interesting to understand a custom from somewhere else. As Mike says, we have roadside crosses as well, but they're mostly a place where someone died in an automobile accident, and are very plain white crosses with no crucifix or decorations. Thank you for the good information!

Bij ons heb ik dit nog niet gezien wel kapelletjes. Wat je nu wel meer ziet zijn herdenkingskruisen op de plekken waar mensen omgekomen zijn. Mooi foto die traditie weergeeft !!!

Every time I read or hear the word 'Limburg' - I immediately think of the famous (and very smelly) cheese ;P and I do remember also that my parents loved it !!! Do you like all those wonderful cheeses they produce in Holland ? I for one, couldn't live without cheese or liver pate, there you go ;)) ah, memories ... take care, BB
