Description

A couple of months ago I found a box of camera gear at a flea market in Georgia. It contained two Pentax cameras, a pile of lenses, three very nice shoe-mount flashes, and other goodies. I got the whole box for five dollars! The cameras had different lens mounts; one used the M42 screw mount, the other used the Pentax K mount. There are lenses with both types of mount. I got lens adapters to mount both types on my Canon EOS 5D. I have to shoot in manual mode, which is not a problem since I do that a lot anyway. The only tricky part is focusing. I have to focus through the viewfinder strictly by eye, with no help from the camera, but I’m getting the knack of it. All of the lenses are very good quality, fast glass. Besides several great Pentax lenses there are two Vivitar lenses built in 1975, a period when Vivitar was building lenses to compete with the highest quality lens makers in the market. One in particular, shown in the lower photo, is a 70 to 210mm zoom/macro, which I have since found is still very much sought after. I’ve been trying to find a way to afford a Canon 180mm macro lens, but it turns out this Vivitar fills that niche nicely. In my next post are three photos made with that lens, from distances between 1 inch and five feet. The lens has two modes; standard telephoto zoom, and macro. In zoom you push/pull the large focus ring to zoom. After going through a rather complicated operation to put the lens in macro mode, you have a 210mm macro, and focus by pushing or pulling the focus ring. I think playing with this box of goodies is going to keep me occupied for a long time!

I had a 180 macro before and sold it. they are so hard to hold free hand and I do not like tripods. you really hit the jackpot on the cameras. they could bring a great price sold individually
