Description
Every summer my sister and I went with our grandmother to spend a week with her relatives. One year, our Uncle Addis needed to get water from a local pond to use in his hog pen. He loaded the truck with barrels, the water pump, four cousins and a bucket for good measure. At the pond he tried to get the water pump to start with no success. After a good fifteen minutes of watching him struggle, the four of us looked at each other, grabbed the bucket and formed a line. I stood in the pond and dipped water, handed it off to the next girl who handed it up to the truck. We filled two of the barrels that way before Uncle Addis decreed it was enough for that day and took us to my Great Grandfather’s general store and bought us all grape Nehi soft drinks. I could send this picture to my sister with no explanation and she would immediately know what I was illustrating. Some memories stick with you forever.

I really like your nostalgic stories. This is well done and illustrated, right down to the rusty barrels. I remember my great-grandfather having rain barrels. Not much was wasted back then. His barrel was wooden with staves....

I hauled water, used an outhouse & chopped wood for the stove for heat & cooking for the first 10 years in the desert while we were building. I even had graduated from a scrub board to a wringer washer! I bathed outdoors by setting a fire under an old cast iron bath tub. I actually loved it. I've since caught up with civilization. Cool story and render! ")
