Description

Happy Birthday my friend! Gemini V was launched August 21, 1965 with Command Pilot Leroy Gordon Cooper Jr. and Pilot Charles Conrad Jr. It was the last space flight for Cooper and the first space flight for Conrad. A bit of trivia, Neil Armstrong was the back-up Command Pilot for this launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Gemini V landed 7 days, 22 hours, 55 minutes, 14 seconds later on August 29, 1965. They had traveled 3,257,652 miles (5,242,682 kilometers) before splash down in the Caribbean. There were 19 ships, 114 aircraft and 10,265 personal waiting for them and I was on the aircraft carrier USS Lake Champlain that day as part of Helicopter Squadron 5. This is another of my slide conversions and although is not the best photo that I have taken, it is one of my favorites. The enlisted bakers had made this cake to celebrate the successful recovery so Conrad and Cooper visited the enlisted mess hall (ship cafeteria) and sliced up the cake with their ceremonial swords! Pete Conrad on the left and Gordon Cooper on the right. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favorites and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Wow, thank you Dana. Tara is right, I love the facts and figures. I am glad you are taking the time to scan your old photos. What a piece of history - and you were there. I will look up your carrier. On my side, I had orders to go PCS to the Philippines in May of that year, and on the last day and last hour before I was supposed to leave Paine Field they found out that the flightline pass was given to me in error two years previously- as a non-citizen I needed a background investigation first. So they cancelled the orders and I worked in Civil Engineering as a draftsman while the background invetigation was conducted. The investigation lasted seven months. During that time you were part of a historic event. Again Dana, thanks for your thoughtfullness and keep on scanning those oldies. Looking at that picture makes me feel right at home. BTW, I turned 74 and had a fabulous time, Sig....
