Description

This picture I made yesterday afternoon in a supermarket, where were Sinterklaas and his helper Zwarte Piet, to give a gift to the children, plus some candy and a tangerine. The photo is not such good, I guess I had better by using the flash. You don't need to read what I wrote down here, but this is a bit of how in the Netherlands Sinterklaas has become a tradition to celebrate this feast. As a child I can remember that 5 December evening, we celebrated Sinterklaas. We kids first sang many songs for Sinterklaas. Until we heard the knocking on the window, or on the door, as a sign: there he was, bringing us presents and candy. Sinterklaas had a servant named : Zwarte Piet , which scattered candy and gingerbread cookies around. He wore a bag on his shoulder, in which were the presents. Zwarte Piet had a black face, as he always walked on the roofs, along with Sinterklaas, which sat on a white horse. So his face was black with soot, because he had crawled at night through the chimney, to give you a small present, if you had been obedient. Namely, as children we were allowed, about ten days before the 5th December in the evening to install our shoe at the chimney into the room, with a carrot in it for the horse of Sinterklaas . It was very exciting to come down the next day, and see if, and what was done in the shoe. Children who were naughty, received Zwarte Piet blows with a bunch branches, tied together, which they called 'the roe'. Children believed all these things about Sinterklaas, who would really exist, and come from Spain with his black helpers. Some parents abuse(d) this tradition, to frighten their children, so they'd better obey the parents. Thank you very much for your look :)

A wondrous, magical tradition, and I like your capture of Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet, When I was young, I believed in Santas Claus (as he is known here). The, when I "grew-up," I knew better..I thought. Now, I am believing again. :-)
