I was concerned about this tree getting major damage because it had split down the middle of the trunk previously. on advice from friends here I put a long threaded rod though the trunk with nuts and washers one leaf looks like beef

Nice shot! The repair should work and you can start adjusting it in the spring to slowly bring it back tight.
